Understanding transportation prerequisites to be integrated with urban development in developing countries: Iran as a Case

Transit Oriented Development (TOD), as an integrated transportation and land use policy practice, was given attention in recent decades to (re)formulate urban areas worldwide. Amongst different TOD planning dimensions at play in, the design policies tend basically form backbone of TODs, since a multimodal sustainable movement — public (PT) for long trips well non-motorized (NMT) short ones is on agenda. Although it agreed that can provide even greater benefits than wealthier countries term, developing (DCs) are characterized with specific transport-related issues such vexing congestion, inadequate PT infrastructure, financial obstacles, etc., should be dealt deliver successful projects. In this regards, present study sheds further lights prerequisites transit oriented DCs. First, systematic review global literature provided set development. Due national TOD, Iran selected case semi-structured interviews conducted Iranian transport planners along government officials April-June 2019. The results showed although there some favorable conditions developments e.g., amalgamated development ministries, hindered by pro-car subsidized fuel price lack multi-modal infrastructure comparison best practices DCs Curitiba. findings have also implications policymakers, city officials, planners, interested readers practitioners other TOD.
